With fall just around the corner the flats fishing in Pine Island Sound will begin to “heat” up as the water cools down. Flats fishing in Pine Island during September, October, and November are my favorite months to sight fish redfish, although the cooler winter months are good these three months are the BEST by far.
Sight fishing consist of casting to fish laid up in shallow clear “pot holes” as well as redfish that are “tailing”. When a redfish has his nose buried in the sand and his tail is sticking out of the water my heart rate goes up a few beats. Although these redfish are activley feeding when they tail it doesn’t always end with a hooked fish for the angler. We fish very shallow water, 12-18 inches deep therfore the redfish can quickly be spooked away by a bad cast. Make a good cast and the end result is normally a hookup.
I fish Pine Island Sound for the majority of the fall and winter. I have found over the last 7 or 8 years that the fishery found in Pine Island is better than the backcountry of Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor. Pine Island Sound is a short boat ride from Boca Grande, about 5 miles. I have pick up locations on Boca Grande as well as Pine Island for my fall and winter time charters.
